Games to Look Forward to in 2022

Games to Look Forward to in 2022-Custom Controllers UK

2021 has been a fantastic year for gaming, but 2022 already looks like it is going to be even bigger. We have seen dozens of games announced over the last year, with most of them set to drop this year! So, with 2021 now behind us, we have taken a look at ten of the biggest games that will release this year. And there is a lot to be excited about, so let’s take a look.

Take note that exact dates for some of these games have not been confirmed, those that are will be included. It is also very important that you also expect delays.

Legend of Zelda Breath of the Wild 2

Though Breath of the Wild 2 may not be the actual name of the sequel of the hit game, it’s the best we have got in terms of a title so I am just going to go off that. But regardless, in the Nintendo Direct reveal stream in summer 2021, it was revealed that Legend of Zelda Breath of the Wild was going to get its sequel in 2022. And if it is just as good as the first, I am going to be delighted.

I definitely would have put this higher on the list if we actually knew anything about the game so far apart from a reveal trailer. But I am pretty pumped for it.

Starfield

Bethesda announced in the summer that their new IP, Starfield, would release at the end of 2022. November 11th to be exact. And just like with BOTW 2, I would like to rank this game higher on the list but we know almost nothing about it apart from a teaser trailer and a few concepts. The best way to describe this game is Fallout in space.

Starfield will also be an Xbox exclusive, so all of the Xbox players have quite a bit to look forward to.

Ghostwire: Tokyo

Ghostwire: Tokyo is a game we have known about for a little while now. And after the PlayStation Showcase a few months ago, we now know that it will release in the spring time of 2022. No release date has been confirmed yet, so there is still a chance of delay. But this is certainly a game to look out for.

This upcoming release from Tango Softworks at Bethesda, puts you in a twisted version of Tokyo where almost all of the city’s inhabitants have mysteriously gone missing. On the quest for answers, you obtain a number of supernatural powers that will help you to fight the Visitors and multiple other worldly threats.

As a PlayStation 5 exclusive, there is quite a lot to look forward to. If you are a PS5 player of course. Expect some amazing graphics, powerful performance all around and just a heap of fun overall. And it will be interesting to see how the combat comes out. Magic looks like it is going to be the main form of combat, so hopefully we get to see some truly epic powers and abilities to wield.

S.T.A.L.K.E.R 2: Heart of Chernobyl

The first S.T.A.L.K.E.R game in around 13 years was announced at E3 this year, and will be the first in the series to be available on consoles. And by console, I mean the Xbox. PlayStation users will have to sit out on this one.

S.T.A.L.K.E.R 2 throws you straight into the post-apocalyptic Chernobyl Exclusion Zone, where you must survive a dark and devastating open world. Through this non-linear journey, you will encounter both mutants and deadly anomalies that will attempt to end your adventure. But you must also take into account your survival and the supplies you will need to last.

Truth be told, I have not played any of the S.T.A.L.K.E.R games, but this does look promising. What we have seen so far in terms of weapons, the enemies we will face, the characters we will encounter and the world we will explore, all look very interesting. And I am looking forward to not only how this game will play out, but also trying out some of the original games in preparation.

Redfall

Yet another Xbox exclusive that was revealed earlier this year, Redfall. Redfall will be the next release from Arkane studios and Bethesda. I am a big fan of Arkane and their work, and I cannot wait to get a hold of this. No confirmed release date yet, but we do know that it will release in the summer of 2022.

Redfall will follow four characters into the vampire infested town of Redfall in Massachusetts. After a scientific experiment gone wrong, a number of people have turned into vampires and received a number of powerful abilities. In this open world, you can play by yourself or with up to three additional players to take down these threats and the cult that follows them.

As it is an Xbox exclusive, you can expect it to be available on game pass from day one. And though we do not know much about the game yet, what we have seen so far looks quite interesting. And since Arkane is making it, you can expect it to be a load of fun.

Forspoken

Forspoken is next on the list and from what has been shown so far, it looks amazing. And it is just starting to dawn on me that there are only two games on this list that aren’t exclusive to a particular platform, and I haven’t even got to them yet. I am saying this because Forspoken is another PlayStation exclusive.

The PlayStation Showcase is where we got our first look at the wonderful world and epic powers that will be introduced with Forspoken. You will play as Frey Holland, a woman who is mysteriously transported to the world of Athia from New York City. And from the first look, the world looks just so brilliant, and the magic we will get to use for combat looks just as good.

From a first glance, this game looks really exciting and the world looks beautiful. And this game is set to release on the 24th of May 2022. Though this is another magic-oriented combat game, it looks and sounds astonishing from what has been shown so far.

Dying Light 2: Stay Human

Finally, onto the first game that isn’t an exclusive. Dying Light 2, and it looks pretty sweet. The first Dying Light brought a very enjoyable open world zombie survival game. And it looks like Dying Light 2 is going to expand on what was set in the first.

And we have seen a lot of trailers and gameplay for this game, and we won’t be waiting long to get it either. And this time our actions in game will have consequences. We will get to make relationships with different groups, make decisions that affect the world and people and of course slay some undead. For example, your actions may lead to new areas being opened or sealed off.

Dying Light 2 is set 20 years after the events of the first game and follows a new protagonist called Aiden Caldwell who possesses a number of new skills due to the infection. There will be a huge number of additions, ranging from new zombies to new superhuman skills. And the open world will be even bigger than before, being four times larger than the original and split into 7 regions.

On February 4th, we will finally be able to jump into this world and experience some brutal combat. I am looking forward to this game, and the changes that have been shown off look like they are going to have a huge impact.

Horizon Forbidden West

The sequel to the PlayStation hit Horizon Zero Dawn is on the way, and one of the most exciting reveals that we have got this year. The first Horizon Zero Dawn was an amazing experience, exploring the world, hunting down the dangerous robots that inhabited it and learning about the world and the events that made it, were all just brilliant.

And now we are getting the sequel, Horizon Forbidden West. Taking you to the wide wilderness of San Francisco, where a new threat named the “Red Blight” has started corrupting the nature and robots that inhabit the location. We will get to see both new and old characters on Aloy’s next adventure in this post-apocalyptic world.

But what most people are excited for is the new robotic creatures that will be introduced. With recent trailers and reveals we have seen many more, and they look just as awesome as we hoped. Of course, there is the “trumortusk” a new elephant inspired robot. But there are also other epic creatures like giant serpents, robotic monkeys, tortoise inspired robots and a lot more to come.

Yet another game I can’t wait to get my hands on. And it is going to be releasing on the 18th of February. And it certainly does look like February is going to be a busy month for gamers, with Dying Light 2 releasing on the 4th, Horizon on the 18th and the next big game Elden Ring on the 25th.

Elden Ring

Elden Ring has been talked about for years. We have known it has been in the work for a long time, and for a while none of us even believed that this game existed because of how little we knew. But 2021 finally broke that silence, and Elden Ring has not only been revealed but the game has been confirmed to be releasing on the 25th of February.

If you do not know what Elden Ring is, then I’ll briefly talk about it now. Elden Ring takes us into the realm of the Lands Between, where we must find all Great Runes and restore the Elden Ring and ultimately become the Elden Lore. Made by FromSoftware and Bandai Namco and in collaboration with Hidetaka Miyazaki and George R.R Martin, Elden Ring is set to be the successor to the highly rated Dark Souls franchise.

You know what that means. A new souls-like game, and a great challenge for a lot of the hardcore players out there. A lot of the character-building elements, combat and mechanics that you love from previous Souls games will be found within this game. And if you have not seen the trailers, you definitely need to because the game looks absolutely beautiful. And with the power of Xbox Series X, PlayStation 5 and recent PC upgrades, this is sure to be one of the best performing Souls games to this day.

Just like with the rest of the games on this list, I am incredibly excited to get into this game and seeing what it has to offer. And I am sure that most of you feel the same. But there is one game that I am looking forward to the most.

God of War Ragnarök

If you have played God of War (2018), you can probably understand why I am super excited for God of War Ragnarök. Everything about God of War (2018) was just outstanding, the incredible story, the beautiful and well-built worlds, the characters, the boss fights and so much more just made for an unforgettable experience. And with God of War Ragnarök announced and planned to release in 2022, I cannot wait any longer to see what we will be given.

God of War Ragnarök picks up where God of War (2018) left off. Kratos and Atreus set off on another quest to save the people from the events of Ragnarök. But it is never that simple. Norse gods, Freya and Thor have targeted our favourite characters out of vengeance for the loved ones that they lost in the previous game.

And the world is only going to be bigger. With God of War Ragnarök we will have all nine realms available to us. In 2018 we only had access to 6, with Vanaheim, Svartalfheim and Asgard being unavailable. And of course, we can expect new creatures, enemies and characters from Norse mythology, along with all of the ones we know and love.

Though no release date has been confirmed yet, we can be sure that it will release in 2022. So, not long to go now!

Honourable Mentions

There a few entries that have just missed out on the list, and I thought it’d be good to bring some of them up here.

Destiny 2: The Witch Queen is set to release on the 22nd of February, and as it is an expansion, it has missed out. But I do believe that this is going to be a huge release for the game, and will set a great path forward for Destiny 2. The Hive have managed to harness the power of the light, and it is up to us to stop them and put an end to their leader: Savathun, the Witch Queen.

Tom Clancy’s Rainbow Six Extraction. The new PvE mode that is set to release in January is another game that we know is coming. The spin-off to the highly rated Rainbow Six Siege, putting us into a fight against the Archaeans, an alien species. And responses to this game have been very mixed. This is because this game is based upon and reworked from a free limited time game mode called “Outbreak” that was introduced to Rainbow Six Siege in 2018.

Tiny Tina’s Wonderlands is the next entry into the Borderlands universe and is planned to release on the 25th of March. If you have played any of the previous entries, you can expect this be a bit like the Borderlands 2 DLC: Tony Tina’s Assault on Dragon Keep. But of course, we will see new locations, next-generation graphics and performance, new weapons and weapon types, new abilities, magic, enemies and more.

Beyond 2022

We have gone over the confirmed releases for 2022, but there are a few games coming over the next few years that I want to mention before I end this blog. As we don’t know a lot about some of these games, I am just going to quickly talk about them.

  • Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 – The first Spiderman game for PS4 was a massive hit, and soon we are going to get our next entry. In 2023, it looks like we are going to be able to play as both Peter Parker and Miles Morales in the fight against Venom.
  • Marvel’s Wolverine – Insomniac have a lot in the works, and a new Wolverine game is one of them. Although we only have a teaser trailer currently, it was enough to get me excited.
  • Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic Remake – A fan favourite and highly-rated classic is in the works for a remake. Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic is being remade for the PlayStation 5 and a lot of players are excited. I have never played it before, but I am looking forward to experiencing it for the first time.
  • Alan Wake 2 – the sequel to the highly rated survival horror Alan Wake has been announced, and is in the works. With a release date rumoured to be in 2023, it is definitely worth mentioning. The original Alan Wake is one of my favourite games of all time, and I cannot wait to see where the plot goes with Alan Wake 2.
  • Destiny 2: Lightfall – Assuming that Bungie stick to their yearly expansion model, we will see Destiny 2 Lightfall release in 2023. We know nothing about Lightfall apart from the fact that it will be the last expansion before The Final Shape expansion, the final chapter of the light and dark storyline.

Has another game got your attention for next year? Then why not share it in the comments below. But this has been our choice of games to look forward to in 2022, and even beyond that.
