As amazing as it is playing with friends and family on your favourite video games, exploring worlds together, racing against each other or battling enemies as a team, sometimes there is no better feeling than sitting alone, putting your headphones on to block the outside world and game single-player. Previously we have mentioned all the best games to play with a group in our blog Best Multiplayer Video Games, so now let’s check out some incredible single-player options, for whenever you just want to play alone.

1- Red Dead Redemption 2 

First up on our list is a slightly older one but our favourite option, Red Dead Redemption 2. Released in October 2018, this game is an action-adventure video game which is set in 1899 and follows a gang of outlaws who have failed a robbery and now must fight against the law whilst travelling across America when problems threaten to tear the group apart. 

Available on PlayStation and Xbox it is the perfect single-player game which has a great open world with plenty of missions, challenges, exploration, and hunting so you will never get bored when playing.

Pros:  Cons:
  • Side quests are as exciting as main missions.
  • Lots going on within the game to keep entertaining. 
  • Animations sometimes make gameplay slow. 


    2- Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth

    Second on the list is a lot more recent, the 2024 edition of Final Fantasy Rebirth. This PS5-based fighting, action video game is just perfect for single-player. There is a good amount of side quests with interesting characters to meet along the way. It follows the events of the previous game where it is revealed the main character Zack Fair that is living in a timeline where the end of the world is approaching due to the Planet’s mako being completely emptied.

    • Beautiful soundtrack
    • In-depth combat system.
    • Camera can be sensitive sometimes.



      3- Marvel’s Spider-Man 2

      Marvel's Spider-Man 2 is the next game on our list, releasing in 2023, October. This action-adventure video game shows players our leading characters Peter Parker and Miles Morales, who are struggling to navigate the next steps in their lives whilst still combating several new threats in the city. Make sure to check out Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 now on PS5.

      • Great visuals
      • Good selection of characters and villains.
      • The area to play feels bigger.
      • Can be predictable sometimes.



        4- God of War Ragnarok

        God Of War Ragnarok has been described as one of the best single-player video games on the PS5. It has a good selection of content to get through whilst playing with a strong storyline throughout. Available on PlayStation and released in November 2022, this role-playing game follows Kratos and his son Atreus as they prepare for the cataclysm that threatens to be unleashed upon all of the nine realms.

        • Stunning visuals
        • Engaging gameplay
        • The camera sometimes feels like it's in the way.



          5- Alan Wake 2 

          If you love a good jumpscare, this single-player, survival, horror game is certainly calling you! Alan Wake 2, released in October 2023, on PS5, Xbox and PC is the perfect single-player adventure filled with psychological terrors mixed into horror action. Players follow Alan Wake, a best-selling novelist, who has been trapped in an alternative dimension for 13 years, as he attempts to escape by writing a horror story involving an FBI special agent.

          • Brilliant story
          • Great soundtrack
          • Beautiful art style and graphics
          • Difficult to play on PC die to power needed



            6- Elden Ring

            Elden Ring was released in February 2022 and is an action-role-playing video game for the PlayStation and Xbox. Players must travel the realm to repair the Elden Ring and become the Elden Lord. It is a great single-player option with its single-player features giving the game a slight edge considering you cannot rely on others when battling enemies or completing challenges.

            • Stunning, open world
            • Great for combat
            • The world-building is great
            • The camera is quite rough



              7- The Last Of Us 2

              Yet another horror, survival video game perfect for single players, released in June 2020 was The Last Of Us 2. Set in a post-apocalyptic United States the game follows our 2 leading characters Ellie who is setting out for revenge for a murder, and Abby, a soldier who becomes involved in a conflict between her militia and a religious cult. This PlayStation-based game is an addictive and entertaining story for any single-player gamer.

              • Stunning visuals
              • Occasional glitches



              8- The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt

              Nearing the end of our list now we have The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt, a PlayStation/ Xbox game that is heavily orientated around single-player use. Although quite an old game released in May 2015, this fighting video game is brilliant for single-player, although compatible with multiplayer too. In the game, players control Geralt Of Rivia, a monster slayer for hire known as a Witcher, who searches for his daughter who is on the run from the magical creatures the Wild Hunt.

               Pros: Cons:
              • Gorgeous landscapes and overall environment
              • Combat feels faster
              • Loading times are longer


                9- Cyberpunk 2077

                Cyberpunk 2077 is 9th on our list. Released in December 2020 on PlayStation and Xbox, this shooter video game is set in 2077 and follows local fixer Dexter who hires V and Jackie to help steal a biochip known as ‘the Relic’. They steal it however the plan goes wrong when they witness the murder of the megacorps leader at the hands of his son… If you are looking for great gameplay to play solo when it comes to defeating and attacking enemies, Cyberpunk 2077 is just what you need to play!

                • Feels very immersive.
                • Gorgeous graphics and overall gameplay
                • Feels slightly short


                  10-  The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom 

                  Our final recommendation for the best single-player video game has to be The Legend Of Zelda: Tears Of The Kingdom, a fighting video game available on Nintendo Switch. Released in May 2023 players can explore a vast expanse of Hyrule solo or team up with friends for more fun. The gamer controls Link as he searches for Princess Zelda and fights to prevent Ganondorf from destroying Hyrule.

                  • A good amount of challenges
                  • Lots of rewarding gameplay
                  • Performance isn't always great
