After what feels like years of waiting (which it technically has been) the Switch 2 console was finally released on June 5th, 2025. Before we even begin this review we wanted to start on the console release date, this is one of the first pieces of gaming, in terms of consoles and video games, that's released on its designated release date without any delays. When we saw the console at Nintendo Direct and the Nintendo Tour, it was met with a lot of positivity, so already the console has high hopes and expectations.
So after a painful 8 year wait between the two consoles, will this one be worth it? Our official review is here, let's go!

Are Switch 2 Joy-Cons bigger?
Our praise towards the Switch 2 mainly falls in terms of its controls. We knew that the Switch 2 would look different in terms of being bigger and colour options, so we're here to delve into the gameplay controls.
Holding the Switch 2 feels great. Although bigger, the thickness of the console feels the same and because the console itself is bigger, so are the joycons. The controllers are both longer, which is a lot better because on the original Switch, we found it very difficult to hold the controllers as they didn't quite fit in the palm of your hand. It feels a lot more natural to hold the controllers now, making gaming a lot easier. The topper on the thumb stick also feels smoother and larger again, we found gaming a lot easier because of this because it allows for improved timing controls and precise gaming action.
Another feature we were keen to look into was the magnetic connection of the controller to the console. The sliding feature is accompanied by a magnetic connection which makes attaching the two much, much easier. A funny little addition is because of the magnetic click; you can attach the controllers upside down to the console and oppositely (the left controller can click into the right-hand side and vice verse). Just remember this when you're gaming with the full console attached, in case you start playing upside down or back to front on accident.
Will the Switch 2 have mouse control?
The mouse controls of the joycon were a factor we were very keen to look into. There are a couple of games that specifically use this feature, but Cyberpunk 2077 also allows mouse controls when gaming. One thing we noticed was that both controllers need to be discontinued from the system so that one can work as a mouse. This does make sense to us because it would be tricky anyway to hold the console with one hand and use the mouse with the other. Tracking of the mouse was impressive too, it worked on completely stable surfaces like the floor and tables but also worked better than expected on the surface of our leg. Obviously, it wasn't 100% perfect but was still very incredible.
Is it worth upgrading to Nintendo Switch 2?
And whilst this console is certainly excellent, there are still a couple of features that we think could be worked on. Although we praised it, there's one aspect of the controllers we think needs to be re-evaluated. The layout of the joycon isn't great for younger users. With the Switch 1, there was already negativity about how the thumb sticks were a significant distance apart, and this had only been amplified with the size increase of the Switch 2. Once you get used to the distance it's something that can be easily ignored, it's just slightly inconvenient for younger players with smaller hands.

Conclusion:
Overall, we're very happy with this console. The use of the mouse controls certainly adds another level to gaming, introducing PC gaming and handheld consoles together. As more and more Switch 2-specific games release, we can't wait to see what the future holds for this type of gaming. It's a great console certainly worth the hype.
